01

Product roles

Wise begins with an online transfer or an account balance. A customer can hold supported currencies, convert them and send to a bank account. Wise explains the fee before payment and says it uses the mid-market exchange rate without marking up that rate. The account can be useful for someone who travels, receives money or manages several currencies, but it is an e-money product rather than a bank deposit.

OFX begins with a quote and a beneficiary. The sender registers, verifies, books a rate and transfers funding to OFX. OFX then releases the payment to the beneficiary bank. The service also describes business payments, regular payments, forward contracts and limit orders. Those options are relevant to a property purchase, tuition, salary or recurring family support, but the ordinary consumer recipient is still normally a bank account.

This makes Wise the easier first look for self-service everyday transfers and OFX the more deliberate choice for a planned bank payment. If the recipient needs cash pickup or a mobile wallet, neither product should be assumed suitable without a route-specific option. Wise’s currency breadth and OFX’s destination count do not replace checking the actual payout method.

02

Account access and verification

Wise signup asks for identity information and can require a passport, national identity card or accepted driving licence. It may perform additional checks before releasing a transfer; Wise says these normally take two to ten working days, although some can take longer. A new account should be verified before a deadline payment.

OFX also verifies identity before a first transfer and can ask for source-of-funds or beneficiary information. Large or unusual orders can receive closer review. The sender books the deal, receives payment instructions and must fund from an accepted account. A quote is not the same as cleared money and a bank reference must be exact.

The access contrast is practical. Wise’s self-service account can keep the entire quote and payment history in one place. OFX’s dealing-desk model can be reassuring when the sender wants a person to discuss a large transaction. In either flow, use the same legal name across profile, funding account and beneficiary details, and upload evidence only through the authenticated channel.

03

Funding and payout

Wise accepts bank transfer as a commonly low-cost funding method and supports Visa, Mastercard and some Maestro cards in eligible settings; Amex and Discover are excluded in the cited card guidance. Funding speed and price change with the method. The standard payout is a bank account, although local options can appear by market.

OFX commonly expects the sender to pay the booked deal by bank transfer. Its UK guidance also covers debit-card funding with a stated per-deal ceiling. Bank funding can be appropriate for a larger payment but gives the sender a matching and clearance step before release. OFX regular-payment arrangements can use scheduled bank funding in eligible currencies.

Hold the payment rail constant in a live comparison. Wise card-to-bank should not be compared with OFX bank-to-bank if the question is price. If a Wise balance transfer is used, record that separately from card or bank funding. On the receiving side, confirm the beneficiary bank accepts the selected currency and any intermediary routing.

04

Fees, rates and amount effects

Wise says its fee varies with amount, currency and payment method and is shown before sending. The mid-market rate is a clear reference point, but the fee still reduces the delivered amount. A fast card-funded quote may cost more than a bank-funded quote, and a small minimum fee can be significant for a low principal.

OFX’s UK pages describe some transfers as fee-free while explaining that the customer exchange rate includes a margin from the market or wholesale rate. Intermediary or beneficiary banks may deduct charges outside OFX’s control. A “no OFX fee” line therefore cannot be compared with Wise’s fee alone; compare what arrives after the conversion and account for any disclosed external charge.

At £100, Wise’s fee structure and OFX’s UK minimum can make Wise the more natural fit. At £1,000 or more, the rate margin becomes more consequential and an OFX specialist or forward contract may add value. A larger principal does not prove OFX is cheaper; it makes a small rate difference more visible in the destination currency.

Keep standard pricing separate from promotions. Wise may display a regional referral or introductory offer; OFX can show local incentives. Record eligibility, cap, expiry and whether the benefit changes the rate, fee or a later reward. A standard repeat transfer should never inherit a first-use assumption.

05

Speed and status

Wise shows an estimated arrival time in the transfer tracker. Wise’s help material says a card payment is usually instant to Wise, bank funding can take one to four working days and SWIFT funding can take one to six working days to reach Wise. The receiving bank may still post later, and extra checks can move the estimate.

OFX says major currencies usually arrive in one to two business days after OFX receives the sender’s funds; some exotic currencies can take one to three business days. The clock starts after cleared funding, not after the rate is first viewed. Weekends, bank holidays, beneficiary checks and local posting can affect the final result.

Wise provides a tracker and OFX offers online, app or specialist status support. A pending status should be diagnosed: funding not matched, identity review, provider release or beneficiary-bank posting. Do not submit a duplicate while the first transfer is being investigated. Keep the reference, receipt and quote timestamp.

06

Coverage, limits and transfer size

Wise says sending is available in most countries, subject to maintained unsupported-country and product restrictions. OFX describes 50-plus currencies and 170-plus destinations, with residence and currency conditions. A currency visible in a converter may not be available for a particular sender or payout.

Wise limits can depend on currency, payment method, verification and local rules. OFX says it does not enforce a universal maximum in one FAQ, but the sender’s bank, debit-card ceiling or compliance controls can impose one. Confirm the signed-in account’s limit before promising a recipient a date or amount.

For a small personal send, Wise’s online fee breakdown may be easier to understand. For a recurring or large bank payment, OFX’s scheduled payments and rate-management tools may outweigh a simple app comparison. For a cash or wallet recipient, first find a service that actually supports the rail.

07

Safety, cancellation and support

Wise says its UK e-money entity safeguards customer funds separately and that balances are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. OFX identifies its UK entity as FCA-regulated for electronic money and payment services and describes safeguarding and security measures. These are different protections from a conventional bank deposit and depend on the customer’s entity.

Wise says an uncompleted transfer may be cancelled, while a completed payout cannot be cancelled; card refunds are usually two to five working days and can take up to ten. OFX cancellation depends on whether the deal has been funded or released, and a bank return may involve extra time or charges. Contact support immediately when beneficiary details are wrong.

Wise directs logged-in customers through Help and Contact and says phone support is available with regional exceptions. OFX offers an OFXpert and complaint route. Give either team the reference, funding proof, amount, beneficiary and exact status. A support acknowledgement is not proof that the money has returned.

08

Customer sentiment, not a price metric

Wise Trustpilot themes include appreciation for clear pricing, convenient account tools and successful bank transfers, alongside reports of verification, account restriction and support friction. OFX themes include praise for knowledgeable staff and smooth large transfers, alongside complaints about reviews, login issues, returned funds or delayed responses. These are self-selected customer accounts, not a controlled reliability test.

The product distinction matters when interpreting a review. A Wise customer may be using a balance or card feature; an OFX customer may be moving a high-value bank payment. Read the current profiles as prompts to understand the process, then use official terms and the live quote for the decision. Sentiment cannot validate the 460 archived price pairs.

09

Who should choose Wise?

Choose Wise when the sender wants a visible fee and rate explanation, web access, a multi-currency balance or a standard bank transfer that can be funded by a familiar local method. It is the more natural first quote for many small and medium self-service payments.

Choose OFX when the sender is comfortable funding a booked bank deal, needs a £100-plus UK transfer, wants regular-payment scheduling or values a person who can discuss a large transaction. OFX can be the better operational fit even when another quote delivers more, because timing, support and planning tools have value.

If the two live quotes support the same beneficiary bank, enter the same sending amount and funding rail. Compare recipient amount, fee, rate, delivery estimate and any external bank charge. If the recipient needs cash, wallet or home delivery, change the provider set rather than forcing a bank-only comparison.

10

BestSendRate evidence and reproducible method

The public BestSendRate catalogue lists 85,879 canonical Wise observations from 20 July to 3 September 2026 and 440 canonical OFX observations from 21 July to 3 September 2026. They are recorded quotes, not completed transfers, receipts, customers or delivery outcomes.

The validated result is 460 exact standard bank-to-bank pairings: Wise wins 460, OFX wins 0 and ties are 0. Pairing required equal date, route, amount, pricing mode, pay-in and pay-out; source and destination currencies were included in the route key. Rows with unknown methods, non-positive recipient amounts, low confidence or legacy collection were excluded. This study is a historical observation and cannot be applied to every amount or route.

Promotional records were not mixed into standard pricing. If a future Remitly comparison is added, it would need cap-aware piecewise pricing, but this Wise–OFX table contains standard Wise and standard OFX rows only. The public API can be rerun by querying each route and amount, deduplicating by the exact key and comparing recipient amounts. Never turn the 460–0 split into a guaranteed saving or universal rank.

11

How to decide for different amounts

For a modest household transfer, Wise’s all-in preview is usually the simpler reference point. The sender can see the fee before paying, fund from a local bank or eligible card and follow the tracker without arranging a separate booked deal. OFX can still be compared, but its minimum and the extra funding step may make the workflow disproportionate to the payment.

For a larger bank payment, the decision changes in emphasis. OFX’s ability to discuss a rate, schedule regular payments or set an eligible order can be valuable when a recipient needs a predictable amount on a future date. Wise may remain cheaper on the live quote, and its transparent fee makes that easy to test. A forward contract or limit order also has terms and risk; it is not a free guarantee of a favourable currency movement.

For a recurring transfer, capture a normal quote from both services at the intended cadence. Include the receiving bank’s currency and any intermediary instructions. Do not assume that a Wise account balance quote equals a card quote, or that an OFX customer rate booked today will remain available next month. A repeat plan should be based on the standard process and budget for verification or bank-holiday timing.

12

What the historical result can and cannot answer

The 460 Wise wins describe recipient amounts observed under identical archive keys. They do not answer whether OFX’s phone support resolves an exception faster, whether Wise’s account features are more useful, or whether either provider can pay a particular cash recipient. They also do not include a promotion. Those questions belong to the product and current-quote sections, where the reader can check the applicable entity and terms.

If a future archive refresh changes the overlapping routes or methods, recalculate rather than carrying the split forward. A fair update would preserve the same date, amount, mode, pay-in and pay-out equality, show the number of ties, and report standard and promotional groups separately. The goal is a reproducible price observation, not a permanent badge.

13

Planning around the funding clock

Wise and OFX use different operational clocks. Wise can show an estimate while a bank payment is travelling to Wise, and its tracker updates as the transfer moves through review and recipient-bank posting. OFX’s quoted deal is normally funded after booking, so its delivery estimate begins when OFX receives cleared money. A sender who compares only the final “one to two days” language may miss the first stage entirely.

For a property, tuition or supplier payment, ask the beneficiary bank which currency and intermediary details it requires. Wise can provide beneficiary instructions within the account; OFX provides funding instructions and may request confirmation of the purpose or source of funds. Keep those instructions beside the quote. A correct amount sent with an incorrect reference can take longer than the advertised delivery window.

For a small family payment, compare the total cost after any card fee and minimum. For a large payment, compare the amount received after Wise’s visible fee, OFX’s customer-rate margin and any possible bank deduction. Then value the support and planning features separately. This keeps a service advantage from being mistaken for a price advantage.
